If your PS4 spins a game, stops, pushes the disc halfway out and pulls it back in, or shows an “Unrecognized Disc” error, the Blu-ray drive is usually struggling to read. In this video from our YouTube channel, David diagnoses a PS4 (original “fat” model) with exactly that problem and fixes it by replacing the drive’s laser.

Symptoms
- The disc spins, stops, spins again and never loads
- The drive pushes the disc partway out and pulls it back in
- Clunking or clicking from the drive while it tries to read
- “Unrecognized Disc” or the game simply won’t start
- Everything else works: the console powers on, reaches the home screen and connects to Wi-Fi and controllers
Likely causes
- A worn or failing Blu-ray laser. In the video this is the most common cause of the spin-stop-eject pattern, and it’s what the console needed.
- Dirty or damaged disc. Rule it out first by cleaning the disc or trying a different game. The PS4 also won’t read burned DVDs, CDs or Blu-rays.
- Loose drive rollers. The rollers inside the drive can come loose and cause discs to be rejected.
- Database or software problems. Sony recommends rebuilding the database in Safe Mode before assuming hardware failure.
What the repair involves
Before opening the console, try Sony’s recommended steps: clean the disc with a soft cloth, then turn the PS4 off, hold the power button until the second beep (about 7 seconds) to enter Safe Mode, and choose Rebuild Database. If that doesn’t help, reinstalling the system software is the next step. If none of that fixes it, the problem is in the drive itself.
Here’s what the video shows:
- Diagnose by ear. With a disc inserted, David listens to the drive. A healthy drive spins up and reads; a failing laser spins and stops repeatedly, then tries to eject and re-take the disc.
- Confirm the rest of the console works. He checks that the PS4 reaches the home screen and that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections are fine, so the drive is the only fault.
- Open the console. In this case the warranty sticker and screw covers were already missing, a sign someone had opened it before (usually to try cleaning the laser).
- Dust it out and remove the Blu-ray drive. He blows out the dust, identifies the drive model, removes the drive’s back plate and takes out the single-lens (“one-eye”) laser.
- Install a replacement laser. The new laser came from a donor drive. He reassembles the console.
- Test. He inserts a disc, confirms it spins smoothly, ejects and re-inserts it, then lets the game start installing to make sure the new laser reads reliably.
David’s take on cleaning the laser: it works on PS2s, but on a PS4 he has essentially never seen it fix this problem. Replacing the laser is what fixed this one.
Parts involved
- Blu-ray drive laser (single-lens “one-eye” laser that matches the drive model)
- Compressed air for dust
- No other parts were replaced in this repair
When to send it in
Send it in if cleaning the disc and rebuilding the database didn’t help, and the drive still spins, stops and tries to eject. Lasers have to match the specific drive model, the console has to be taken apart to reach the drive, and a replacement laser has to be tested with a real game before the console goes back together.
If someone has already tried cleaning or adjusting the laser and the problem got worse, mention that when you send it in.
FAQ
Will cleaning the laser fix my PS4?
Rarely. In the video, David says he has seen cleaning work on PS2s but essentially never on a PS4 with this symptom. A failing laser usually has to be replaced.
Is it my disc or my PS4?
Try a different, clean game. If every disc gives the same spin-stop-eject behavior, the drive is the problem. Burned discs won’t read on a PS4 at all.
Does the whole drive need to be replaced?
Not in this repair. Only the laser inside the Blu-ray drive was replaced.
How long does the repair take?
Mail-in repairs take 3–5 days, and repairs at our Lincoln store take 3–5 days.
