PS5 Overheating or “Too Hot” Warning? Fan Replacement Repair Guide

A PS5 that shows the “Your PS5 is too hot” warning and then shuts itself off after you’ve been playing a while has a cooling problem. In this video from our YouTube channel, David opens a PS5 with that problem, finds a fan that isn’t spinning at all, and replaces it.

Symptoms

  • The “Your PS5 is too hot” warning appears on screen
  • The PS5 turns itself off during longer play sessions
  • The cooling fan isn’t spinning, or it’s unusually loud
  • The console feels very hot while gaming

Likely causes

  • A failed cooling fan. This was the problem in the video, and David says fan failures are now fairly common on the PS5.
  • Dust blocking the heatsinks. Dust buildup can block airflow and may just need to be blown out.
  • Liquid metal problems on the APU. The PS5’s main processor uses liquid metal as its thermal compound, and a problem there can cause overheating even when the fan is fine.

What the repair involves

Here’s what the video shows:

  1. Remove the side cover. With the disc drive side facing down, the cover on the side without the PS logo pops off.
  2. Power it on and watch the fan. David always checks whether the fan spins. On this console it didn’t spin at all, which confirmed the fault.
  3. Remove the fan cover and the fan. He lifts the small cover with a flathead screwdriver and removes the four screws holding the fan.
  4. Install a replacement fan and power the console back on. The new fan started spinning right away.
  5. Reassemble carefully. The screws are different lengths and thread types, and each goes back in its own spot. Then the side panel goes back on.

If your fan spins normally and the PS5 still overheats, this repair isn’t the fix. The cause is more likely dust in the heatsinks or the liquid metal on the APU, and those need a different repair.

Parts involved

  • Replacement PS5 cooling fan
  • Screws (reused; they’re different lengths, so keep track of where each one goes)
  • David also mentions add-on cooling fans that mount on the back of the console as an option for heavy use (an accessory, not part of the repair)

When to send it in

Send it in if the fan doesn’t spin, if you’re not comfortable working inside the console, or if the fan spins but the console still overheats. That last case points to dust deep in the heatsinks or a liquid metal problem on the APU, which needs more disassembly than a fan swap.

FAQ

How do I know if my PS5 fan is bad?

Take off the side cover and power the console on. If the fan doesn’t spin at all, as in the video, it needs to be replaced.

My fan spins but the PS5 still says it’s too hot. Now what?

A fan swap won’t fix that. The likely causes are dust blocking the heatsinks or a problem with the liquid metal on the APU, so it needs a diagnosis.
